例えば主にアドビSymbolフォントに含まれている、ギリシア文字、ブラケット類、そして数学記号の中の、勾配、積、求和などの記号です。
この文字実体は現代ギリシア語の表記に使われているアルファベットをすべて含みます。
しかし、句読点、アクセント記号をつけられた文字、アクセント付き文字を生成するために必要なアクセント記号(tonoやdialytika)などは含みません。
また古代文字、コプト文字、Polytonicなギリシア語表記に必要な合成済み文字、なども含みません。
この仕様が定めるギリシア文字は、現代ギリシア語の文章を表記することを目的としてはおらず(また不十分な表記しか行えませんが)、工学系や数学系の文章でギリシア文字が必要となる場合のことを想定して定められています。
